Amplexing toads

Amplexing toads

Northern Territory

"Amplexus" comes from the Latin "to embrace". Male toads really do embrace the female and hang on tight - this pair had been bagged hours before and transported with other toads back to the recording site. The males don't necessary discriminate very well and are often found amplexing each other or in groups. He is not actually mating the female but fertilising her eggs. Photograph by Tony Peacock.
